"Yabusame, mounted archery, is one of the Japanese classical ceremonies. A warrior’s form of prayer or religious exercise performed in shrine precincts by mounted archers who shoot at three stationary targets while riding at a full gallop. There are four parts to a yabusame ceremony. First, the group leader, mounted on his horse, points a drawn bow and arrow at the sky and at the ground to symbolize eternal peace between heaven and earth. Next, all riders take turns shooting at three targets having five rings of different colors. These targets are mounted about 63 meters apart in a straight line 2 meters from the track along which the horses gallop. Third, riders who hit all three targets are allowed to shoot at three clay bull’s-eyes. Finally, targets are presented to the leaders for inspection."
