Who is Alex?

14 Mar 2006

There was some discussion about who is the Alex of Alexanderplatz. Well, he is the Russian Tsar Alexander I. Not the same Alex, that stands on Senate Square in Helsinki, but his grandfather uncle, who visited Berlin in 1805. The Tsar had come to persuade still uninvaded Prussia to join a coalition against Napoleon. Later, Potsdamer Platz and Alex became cultural hubs of vibrant/decadent 1920s Berlin. Both squares remain famous, but hardly anything has survived of the old.
