17 Mar 2006

Grazed the subject last year, when 'Spatial data lending facility' was launched in Finland. Now, at least in the UK, there seems to be call for open geographical data. Jo of Mapping Hacks has written about a campaign against a protectionistic EU directive. Guardian magazine has already brought the issue to the mainstream. The argument is, that government collected data should be made free to public, so that new applications would emerge from the grassroots. It is ironic, that for the time being, European open source community has to resort to Google Maps.
