German elections

17 Sep 2005

Germans elect a new parliament tomorrow. Last week I ran into Angela Merkel campaigning in Wittenbergplatz. Then, back in Prenzlauer Berg I saw shopping bags with a slogan that questioned her femininity. In that neighbourhood the most advertised candidate has definitely been the incumbent Bundestagspräsident Wolfgang Thierse. There are also alternatives to the big parties, like the Anarchistic Pogo Party of Germany, whose Wahlspot TV channels refused to air. Also, another under-the-radar faction wants to turn Prenzlberg into a 'micro-nation of diversity'.
